Universal Studios Japan with a 9-year-old: how our day went

Hogwarts Castle at Universal Studios Japan, Osaka, February 2026
Hogwarts Castle at Universal Studios Japan, Osaka, February 2026
Short answer

Yes, it was one of the best days of our trip. We went on a Thursday at the end of February, were at the gates before opening, and had an Express Pass for five rides, with Mario Kart and entry to Super Nintendo World included. It made a full day without long waits. Nine is a perfect age: tall enough for most rides and old enough to love Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World.

Our day, hour by hour

We went on Thursday, February 26, our third day in Japan. Weekdays outside school holidays are the calmer days at Universal Studios Japan, and late February fit that.

  • Before 8 am: at the gates, tickets and Express Pass QR codes ready on the phone.
  • 9:16 am: at Hogwarts. The Harry Potter area in the morning is magic, with the castle above the village and the Hogwarts Express parked at the station.
  • 10:19 am: Jurassic Park, with the jeeps in the jungle.
  • Afternoon: Minion Park, all candy colors and loud music, shows and shops.
  • Evening: back to the hotel, very tired, very happy.

Was the Express Pass worth it?

For us, yes. Our ticket came with an Express Pass for five rides, each with a time slot, including Mario Kart and a timed entry to Super Nintendo World. Instead of standing in the longest lines, we walked in at our time and used the gaps for smaller rides, shows and snacks. With a 9-year-old, that is the difference between a great day and a long, grumpy one.

Express Passes are sold for a specific date, and the prices change with the season. Buy it together with the park ticket, from the official site or an official seller, and check that each ride on it is right for your kid’s height.

Super Nintendo World

On busy days you need a timed entry to get into Super Nintendo World at all. Our Express Pass included it, which took away the stress. Not every Express Pass does, and there is a free timed entry ticket in the official app once you are in the park, while they last. Sort this out before you go, because it is the area most kids talk about.

What made the day work

  • Arrive before opening. The first hour has the shortest waits and the best photos.
  • Plan the big ones for the morning. Harry Potter first, then the rest.
  • One sit-down break. We would add a real lunch break next time.
  • Small budget for souvenirs. Every ride ends in a shop.

Getting there

From central Osaka, take JR to Universal City Station, then walk a few minutes to the gates. If you stay near Osaka Station, the ride is short. Where we stayed for the week is in Osaka as a base.

The day after

We kept the next day lighter: Osaka Castle and the Kaiyukan aquarium, with a lot of sitting in front of big tanks. For the whole plan, see our 11-day split.

What we'd do differently

  • We would plan a sit-down lunch break inside. By mid-afternoon our son was tired, even with short waits.
  • We would buy the Express Pass the moment we pick the date. Popular dates sell out.

Where to stay in Japan with kids

By area, not by hotel. We don't rate hotels.

  • Osaka, Namba: Dotonbori and street food at the door, direct trains to Kansai Airport.
  • Osaka, around Osaka Station or Shin-Osaka: Fast starts for day trips to Kyoto and Himeji.
  • Tokyo, Shinjuku: The biggest train hub in Tokyo, lots of choice, Omoide Yokocho five minutes away.
  • Tokyo, Shibuya: Right by the crossing. Busy and bright, kids usually love it.

Questions parents ask

Is Universal Studios Japan worth it with a 9-year-old?

For us, yes. Nine is the sweet spot: tall enough for most rides, old enough for Harry Potter and Mario, and still excited by every parade and shop.

Do you need an Express Pass at Universal Studios Japan?

Not always, but it changed our day. With an Express Pass we rode the big ones without long lines and still had energy at 3 pm. They are sold for a date and can sell out.

How do you get into Super Nintendo World?

On many days you need a timed entry for the area, either through an Express Pass that includes it or a free timed ticket in the official app after you enter the park. Check the rules for your date.

What time should you arrive at Universal Studios Japan?

Before opening. We had our tickets ready at the gate before 8 am and were in the Harry Potter area soon after. The first hour is the calmest.

Are there height limits on the rides?

Yes, several big rides have minimum heights. Check them on the official site for your kid before you buy an Express Pass, so every ride on it is one they can take.

How do you get to Universal Studios Japan from Osaka?

By JR train to Universal City Station, a short walk from the gates. From Osaka Station it is a quick ride with a change at Nishikujo on many trains.
