Shibuya Crossing with a kid: where to watch it from above

Shibuya Crossing from above after dark, March 2026
Shibuya Crossing from above after dark, March 2026
Short answer

From MAGNET by SHIBUYA109, the building right on the crossing, at dusk. We had dinner on one of its upper floors and watched the crossing go from daylight to neon, from 5:25 to 6:25 pm. Its rooftop, MAG8, is open to visitors, and Shibuya Sky gives a view from much higher.

Our hour above the crossing

We ended our best Tokyo day in Shibuya. Just after 5 pm we crossed it on foot. At 5:25 pm we sat down on an upper floor of MAGNET by SHIBUYA109, the building on the north corner of the crossing, ordered dinner, and our son got a bright pink drink. For the next hour, we watched.

Every couple of minutes, the cars stop, all the lights for walkers turn green at once, and hundreds of people cross in every direction, diagonally too. Then the lights change, the street empties, and the cars move again. It looks like chaos and is perfectly calm. Timing the lights is a good game for a kid.

As the sun went down, the giant screens on the buildings got brighter, until the crossing was all neon. By 6:25 pm it was full night.

Where to watch from

The best height is a few floors up. High enough to see the whole pattern, low enough to see people, umbrellas and cars. Options around the crossing:

  • MAGNET by SHIBUYA109, where we were. On the north corner of the crossing, looking down the street towards the SHIBUYA109 tower. We ate on one of its upper floors. Its rooftop, MAG8, is a viewing lounge with indoor and outdoor space. Entry includes a drink, and young children go in free. Check the opening hours before you go.
  • Cafés and restaurants in the buildings around the crossing. Many have window seats. Arrive before sunset to get one.
  • Shibuya Sky. On top of Shibuya Scramble Square, much higher, with a view over all of Tokyo. Sunset slots sell out, so book ahead.

Crossing it with a kid

Do it. It is one of those things kids talk about later.

  • Wait for green with everyone else, at the front if you can.
  • Hold hands and walk in a straight line to the other side.
  • No stopping in the middle for photos. Take them from the corner, or from above.

Look down at the street, too

From above we spotted things you miss at street level: a line of sports cars waiting at the lights, painted like a movie car, and taxis and buses lining up between the waves of people.

Best time

Dusk. We were there on a Thursday in early March, when the sun set at around 5:45 pm. Arrive half an hour before sunset and stay until it is dark.

The rest of our Tokyo time is in Ueno with a kid and Japan with a 9-year-old.

What we'd do differently

  • We would book a window table or check the opening hours of the viewpoint ahead, so we are sure of a spot at sunset.
  • We would cross on foot first, then go up. Seeing it from above after you have been in it is even better.

Where to stay in Japan with kids

By area, not by hotel. We don't rate hotels.

  • Osaka, Namba: Dotonbori and street food at the door, direct trains to Kansai Airport.
  • Osaka, around Osaka Station or Shin-Osaka: Fast starts for day trips to Kyoto and Himeji.
  • Tokyo, Shinjuku: The biggest train hub in Tokyo, lots of choice, Omoide Yokocho five minutes away.
  • Tokyo, Shibuya: Right by the crossing. Busy and bright, kids usually love it.

Questions parents ask

Where is the best view of Shibuya Crossing?

From the buildings right around it, a few floors up. Windows and rooftops at this height let you see people as people, not dots. Shibuya Sky gives a much higher city view instead.

Can kids go to the MAG8 rooftop at Shibuya?

Yes. MAG8 is the rooftop of MAGNET by SHIBUYA109, right above the crossing, open in the daytime and evening, with a drink included in the entry. Young children enter free.

What is the best time to see Shibuya Crossing?

Dusk. You get the crossing in daylight and then the neon screens switching on, all within an hour. Evenings and weekends are the busiest.

Is it safe to cross Shibuya Crossing with kids?

Yes. Everyone waits for the green light and walks calmly. Hold hands, cross in a straight line, and do not stop in the middle for photos.

Is Shibuya Sky worth it with kids?

We did not go up this time. It is very high and very popular at sunset, so tickets for those slots need booking well ahead.

What else is there for kids around Shibuya?

Shops full of toys and games, the Hachiko statue by the station, and side streets with interesting cars and lights. A short walk is enough to feel the energy.
